Iran Truce Holds as Region's Conflicts Spill Into the Red Sea and Caspian
A fragile US-Iran pause is coinciding with a widening of conflict fronts from the Red Sea to the Caspian, alongside fresh Russia-Ukraine strikes and new Asia-Pacific drills.
A Fragile Iran Pause
Iran will halt attacks as long as the US maintains its pause, an Iranian source said after Trump called off strikes, and the US ambassador to the UN said Trump is giving Iran talks "a little bit of room." The US has now paused Iran strikes for a second consecutive night as Oman pursues a Hormuz transit deal.
Conflict Widens to Red Sea and Caspian
Despite the US pause, the wider war has spread to the Red Sea and Caspian Sea: Ukraine struck Iranian vessels in the Caspian, prompting Tehran to accuse Kyiv of a "hostile and criminal act," and Iran said the attack killed a sailor, with its foreign ministry urging the EU to intervene. Separately, an Israeli strike killed a top Hamas security official in Gaza, and Saudi oil exports are increasingly depending on the Suez Canal as Red Sea risks mount.
Russia-Ukraine and Asia-Pacific Tensions
A Russian attack on Kyiv triggered fires across the Ukrainian capital, while the Kremlin said it's too early to comment on reported US-Ukraine air ceasefire talks. Elsewhere, the US and Japan joined the Philippines for military drills in the South China Sea.
